The short version
- SIL vacancies are listed on provider websites, vacancy registers and through word of mouth.
- Look at the home, the location and the housemates, not just whether a room is free.
- Ask providers the right questions about support, staffing and how well people are matched.
- We support families across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Perth, so reach out and we’ll help you find a fit.
Finding the right Supported Independent Living vacancy is part detective work, part gut feel. A free room is only the start. What really matters is whether the home, the location and the people feel right for the person moving in. Here’s how to search well, and what to weigh up before you say yes.
Where to look for vacancies
SIL vacancies pop up in a few places, and it pays to check more than one:
- Provider websites: many SIL providers list current vacancies directly, often with photos and details about the home.
- Vacancy registers: there are online listings that gather vacancies from different providers in one place.
- Your support network: support coordinators, planners and other families often hear about openings before they’re advertised.
- Word of mouth: local disability community groups can be a surprisingly good source.
If you’re not sure a room is still available or suits your needs, the fastest path is usually to contact the provider directly and ask.
What to look for in a home
When you find a vacancy, look past the fact that a room is free and think about the whole picture. Is the home accessible for the person’s needs? Is it close to transport, work or the things they enjoy? Does it feel warm and lived-in, or clinical? A home should feel like a home.
Also consider the practical side: the level of support on offer, whether staff are there overnight, and how the home is run day to day. Our guide on moving into SIL covers trial stays, which are the best way to test all of this for real.
What to look for in housemates
In a shared home, housemates shape daily life more than almost anything else. Think about whether their ages, interests and routines are a reasonable match. Someone who loves a quiet, early night may not thrive alongside a housemate who has friends over late. None of this has to be perfect, but a thoughtful match makes for a happier home.
Always arrange to meet potential housemates before deciding, and trust how the person moving in feels about the vibe.
Questions to ask a provider
A good provider will welcome your questions. Some worth asking:
- What support is available, and are there staff on site overnight?
- How do you match housemates, and can we meet them first?
- Can we do a trial stay before committing?
- How is the roster of care worked out, and how is my funding used?
- What happens if the placement isn’t the right fit?
