NDIS Positive Behaviour Support in the Pilbara

Now taking Pilbara referrals

Behaviour support that comes to you. What Ability has a registered Behaviour Support Practitioner working across the Pilbara, delivering assessments and Behaviour Support Plans in region, with regular telehealth in between, and more practitioners joining the region soon.

Families and support teams in remote WA are often told the wait is months, or that the only option is a practitioner who has never been to town. We built this differently: one practitioner, frequent visits, and a plan written for how life actually works in the Pilbara.

Behaviour support built for remote distance, not adapted to it

A Behaviour Support Plan is only as good as the people using it every day. In a remote town that means the plan has to work for the family, the school, the local support workers and everyone else involved. Here is how we do that from a distance.

Polina Stolyarova

Behaviour Support Practitioner, Western Australia
BSc Behavioural and Psychological Sciences, UWA

Port Hedland and Karratha · Children, adolescents and adults · Complex support needs · Restrictive practice reduction

Polina supports children, adolescents and adults across Port Hedland, Karratha and the wider Pilbara, working across a broad range of disabilities and complex support needs. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Behavioural and Psychological Sciences from UWA and is completing her Honours part time. Her approach is practical and person centred, focused on improving quality of life, reducing restrictive practices and supporting each participant’s goals, communication and environment.

Working remotely, Polina understands that strategies need to reflect local communities and circumstances. She prioritises cultural safety, listening first and involving participants and families in decisions, with respect for kinship, connection to Country and cultural obligations. Her previous experience teaching scuba diving and yoga across Africa and South East Asia also shaped her calm, adaptable and relationship focused approach.

More practitioners are joining the Pilbara team soon. As the team grows we will keep continuity intact, so you stay with the same practitioner from assessment through to review.

What Ability Perth Support Workers and Participant Smiling

Culturally safe practice

Behaviour support that ignores culture, family structure and community does not work. We work alongside families, community organisations and local services rather than arriving with a plan already written. Where a participant or family would prefer support delivered with a local community organisation involved, we will work that way.

Funding and travel

Behaviour support is funded under Improved Relationships or Behaviour Support Intervention in your NDIS plan. We support participants who are self managed, plan managed and NDIA managed.

Because the Pilbara is classified as remote or very remote, NDIS pricing includes loadings and provider travel that are different to a metro area. We will walk you through exactly what will be claimed from your plan before we start, so there are no surprises in your statements. If you are not sure whether your funding is enough, send an enquiry and we will look at it with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. What Ability has a registered Behaviour Support Practitioner covering Karratha and the wider Pilbara, working on a scheduled in-region rotation with telehealth between visits. Further practitioners are joining the region soon, so availability changes. Contact us to check the current position.

Yes. Port Hedland and South Hedland are visit bases alongside Karratha, and Newman and Tom Price are covered by scheduled visits. Surrounding towns including Roebourne, Wickham, Dampier, Paraburdoo and Onslow are covered from the nearest base or by arrangement.

Partly. We use telehealth for check ins, support team coaching, plan reviews and adjustments between visits. We do not write a Behaviour Support Plan from telehealth alone. Assessment and observation happen in person, in the settings where behaviour is actually occurring, because a plan written without seeing the environment rarely holds up.

Provider travel is claimable under NDIS pricing, and remote and very remote areas have specific rules and loadings. We will explain exactly what will be claimed against your plan before any service starts.

They need to be documented, assessed and authorised under NDIS requirements. Our practitioners are trained in reducing and eliminating restrictive practices, and will prioritise an interim plan where there is immediate risk or an unauthorised practice in place.
