Frequently Asked Questions
Our respite home is located in West Pennant Hills, Sydney, NSW. Families are encouraged to visit the house before proceeding, and as our respite program grows, we’ll continue to explore additional home options to support more families.
No. What Ability’s NDIS respite accommodation is a goal-oriented support service, not simply time away from home. Our respite focuses on building everyday life skills, confidence, and independence in a safe, supportive home environment. Support is delivered 1:1 and aligned with each participant’s NDIS goals, helping them practise routines, develop independence, and feel comfortable away from their family, at a pace that suits them.
While both programs are NDIS-funded supports, they are designed for different needs and outcomes.
Respite accommodation is smaller, more structured, and focused on consistency, routines, and skill development. It is ideal for participants who benefit from predictable environments, relationship-based support, and regular bookings that support long-term independence goals.
Camps are group-based and social, with an emphasis on friendship, shared experiences, and trying new activities in a fun, high-energy environment. Camps are best suited to participants who enjoy group settings and social connection.
Both programs support growth, just in different ways.
Our respite program is funded through Short Term Respite (S.T.R.) under the NDIS. If S.T.R. funding is not currently available in your plan, our team can talk through alternative funding options and help you understand what supports may be suitable based on your circumstances.
Short Term Respite funding is typically located under Core Supports, within the Assistance with Daily Life budget. Your plan may reference this funding as respite, accommodation, or short-term support. If you’re unsure, our team is happy to help you review your plan and confirm eligibility.
Yes. We understand that starting respite accommodation can feel like a big step. We offer transition and gradual entry plans, allowing support to increase over time based on what feels comfortable for the participant and their family. This may include shorter stays or less frequent bookings initially, building up as confidence and familiarity grow.
